Student Activities and Sponsorships at the 2017 CHPC National Conference

Student Cluster Competition

At the conference, teams of undergraduate students selected from the knock-off round in Stellenbosch, July 2017, will compete in the Student Cluster Competition and build small HPC clusters on the exhibition floor from hardware provided by the CHPC and its industry partners. The winning team will be entered into the international competition hosted at the 2018 International Supercomputing Conference in Gernamy. with their clusters at the conference.

Cyber Security Competition

The Cyber Security Challange will include challenges such as Web Hacking, Forensics, Cryptography, Binary Analysis, Password Cracking, Steganography, Reverse Engineering, Mobile Security and teams have to defend their own infrastructure against all the other teams.

Poster Competition

Postgraduate students are invited to present their reseach posters at the conference.  All student posters will be included in the CHPC poster competition with prizes awarded for best overall poster, best presentation or visualization of data, and other categories. 

Poster display boards will be provided by the CHPC and will be setup in the exhibition area. Display boards will be 900mm wide and posters should be in portrait A1 size. Please note that posters must be in English and must have a title, author's name and affiliation. Students are encouraged to bring posters relating to the theme of the conference or their field of study. All posters should be setup between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday, 3 December 2017 and be removed on Thursday, 7 December 2017 at 4pm.


Exceptional abstracts from PhD students or postdoctoral fellows may be accepted for an oral presentation in the main technical sessions of the conference.


Any student or postdoc whose abstract for a poster or talk is accepted may apply for support to attend the conference. Accommodation and national travel will be provided on successful application. Note that there is a limit to the number of students who can be sponsored, so we cannot guarantee that all applicants will be granted support. Only students registered at a South African university for 2017 and residing inside South Africa are eligible for support.

The results were announced on 21 June 2017, following three-days days of immense hard work by twelve international teams.
