Intel Digital Readiness Programs

Increased digitalization requires investment in digital readiness for countries to remain competitive in the global economy. Digital Readiness encompasses skills, trust, and responsible use of emerging technologies by people for broader socio-economic benefits.  Building digital readiness among people is essential for achieving more inclusive outcomes from the digital economy.

Intel is committed to bringing AI everywhere and making AI inclusive by addressing the skills gap for all.

Intel has rolled out the large-scale public-private partnership program, Intel Digital Readiness, with government, academia and industry partners. This shared-value, shared-responsibility program portfolio aims to demystify and democratize emerging technologies for all. These programs are currently being implemented in 29 countries for a diverse non-technical audience, irrespective of their location, gender, and ethnicity.

The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) is a national research infrastructure supported by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), as part of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR). SADiLaR has an enabling function with a focus on all 12 official languages of South Africa, supporting research and development in language technologies and language-related studies in the humanities and social sciences.

SADiLaR’s flagship capacity development programme, ESCALATOR, grows an inclusive and active South African community of practice in Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences through strategic partnerships, tailored training initiatives, the Digital Champions Initiative, DH-IGNITE regional events, and the Digital Humanities Open Educational Resources Champions Programme. The SWiP collaboration with Wikipedia and PanSALB advances South African languages on digital platforms by bringing together communities of language practice to actively contribute to the Wikipedia.

The centre operates several strategic programmes including:

  • The Higher Education Sector Support Programme (HESSP), which provides targeted support to universities in implementing the Language Policy Framework for Public Higher Education Institutions through capacity building, language planning expertise, and terminology development.
  • The Digitisation Programme, which systematically creates digital text, speech, and multimodal resources for all official South African languages while developing natural language processing software tools
  • LwimiLinks, an online platform that centralizes multilingual terminology and language resources to empower language practitioners across South Africa.

Additional initiatives include the Child Language Development Node, Write-it multilingual academic writing support tools, and the recently launched Research Software Awards in partnership with the National Science and Technology Forum.

Through these programmes, SADiLaR provides researchers, students, and educators across South Africa’s 26 public universities and research centres with the skills, resources, and networks needed to ensure a digital future for all official South African languages.
